Lodhran is one of the most backward districts of Punjab. It got the status of district on July 1, 1991. Prior to this, Lodhran was a sub-division of District Multan. Two sub-tehsils, Kahror Pacca and Dunyapur were given the status of sub-division on the same date. The District is located on the northern side of River Sutlej. On its north are the districts of Multan, Khanewal and Vehari while Bahawalpur is on its southern side. On its east lies the districts of Vehari and Bahawalpur while district Multan lies on the western side. The District has an area of 1790 square kilometers. The district is a smooth plain, almost whole under cultivation through canals and tube wells. The subsoil water in Tehsil Dunyapur is brackish while that in Kahror Pucca and Lodhran Tehsils is sweet.
The climate is hot and dry in summer and cold in winter. The hottest months are May, June to July. The maximum and minimum temperatures range between 42 and 28 degree centigrade respectively. The coldest months are December to February. During this period the temperature fluctuates between 21 and 5 centigrade. The average annual rainfall is 71 millimeters.
District Lodhran has 438 'mauzas' (the smallest revenue unit). Of these 41 have population over 5000, 133 have 2 - 5000, 142 have 1 - 2000 and 118 mauzas have under 1000 population (as per 1998 census).
